In our ROOTS study we have used for the most part Hebrew and Aramaic sources, familiar to those who work in this field. The precise references and the dates are apparent from the text itself. In this way we can see what the Targum, Midrash, Talmud and Zohar have to say about each issue. In addition we follow the Hebrew commentaries, the MALBI'M and the MIKRAOTH GEDOLOTH collections, in which we find the Mediaeval Rabbinic exposition. Of great help are also the YALQUT ("portfolio") commentaries, an ordered compilation of what the Talmud has to say about each of the books of the Old Testament. 

The best Western commentaries on Jewish thought are those of Keil-Delitzsch on the Old Testament (10 vols) and Strack-Billerbeck on the New Testament (5vols).
